Speak "Yes" To These 5 Baby Crib Tips

Choosing a Baby Crib

It's thrilling to design a nursery but choosing the crib is one of your most important decisions. The crib that your baby sleeps will have a significant impact on their health and development whether it's the design of the slats, or the mattress height.

Check your crib hardware periodically. Bolts and nails may become loose over time. Avoid placing your crib near blinds or drapes hanging on the ceiling, as they could create an injury risk to your baby.

Size

Size is one of the most important factors to take into consideration when buying the perfect crib. A crib should be large enough to accommodate a sleeping infant, but small enough so that you are able to reach your child to listen to them. It should also be durable enough to stand up to the wear and tear of regular use.

Most cribs are made of metal or wood and come with slatted side panels. These features let caregivers see the baby from various angles and promote airflow. Cribs are used from birth until the child is around two years old. of age, at which point they have to be moved to a toddler bed.

Most cribs are equipped with a mattress support height that can be lowered or raised as your baby grows. The lowest setting is best for newborns, while the highest setting is suitable for babies who are able to sit up or crawl. Make sure you measure the inside of your crib to be sure that the mattress fits, as the slatted design of most cribs may create small gaps that could pose a danger for your baby.

Manufacturers offer cribs and mattresses that aren't standard sizes, yet have the same safety standards. These include bassinets for infants, portable cribs and play yards. These cribs are smaller than the standard cribs and have mesh or rigid sides.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions to determine the recommended mattress size if you select a crib that isn't standard. They might have specifications that differ from the standard crib mattress size of 28 inches wide and 52 inches long. Also, you should check the gap between the crib and mattress to make sure it's not larger than 1 inch which is the most safe space.

A waterproof cover can shield your baby's bedding from spills and accidents. Find one that has an antimicrobial layer to cut down on bacteria and a hypoallergenic barrier that stops allergens.

If you're thinking of buying a crib with drop-sides, know that they have been linked to the deaths of 32 infants between 2000 and 2010, and are banned in the US as of 2011. Even if you plan to purchase a crib with a drop-side or get one as a hand-me-down, be sure to eliminate it when your baby is 35 inches tall or is able to climb out.

Safety

A crib for your baby is one of the safest places to let your child sleep. It's not just an area for rest but also a place where you can see and hold them frequently. There are many crib models and brands available on the market. However, all have to meet certain safety requirements. The Consumer Product Safety Commission sets these standards to ensure that cribs are safe for infants.

Before you put your baby in the crib, ensure that the crib is clean and free of dander and dust. Take away any toys or stuffed animals that could fall off the bed. Also, do not use any blankets or pillows in the crib as they could cause suffocation. Use a fitted sheet and a mattress cover instead.

Some commenters suggested that cribs ought to be required to be in compliance with formaldehyde emission standards set out in the Formaldehyde Standards for Wood Products Act (Pub. L. 111-199) and that cribs made of composite wood should be inspected for conformity. Although these regulations are not directly applicable to cribs, the CPSC has determined that it is appropriate to mandate that cribs and other furniture made from composite wood comply with this important new law.

Some commenters suggested that the requirement that fasteners be tightened after dynamic tests should be included in the crib standard being revised. This suggestion is not something we would consider. The shake test as well as the vertical mattress support tests are dynamic tests that simulate and increase the crib abuse. Loose screw is the second most common cause of crib fatalities.

Other comments were based on EWS incident records. These data indicate that the two most frequent crib hazards are unsafe mattresses and drop-sides. We decided to focus our focus on these issues and incorporate the performance standards already included in the current mandatory standard. By incorporating them by reference, we can ensure that crib safety is maintained consistently and efficiently.

The mattress should be able to fit comfortably into the crib's opening. This is because gaps between the crib and mattress can cause infants' arms and legs to get caught in the crib. A lot of cribs have bars for stabilization to keep the mattress in place. If your crib does not include stabilizer bars, you'll need to purchase an additional mattress pad for support.

A good crib also has a low-sitting mattress that helps keep toddlers from climbing over the edge of the crib. Some cribs are equipped with changing areas, which can make diapering easier and faster. Although they are convenient however, they take up more floor space than traditional cribs and may not be the best option for smaller nurseries.
